Beyond the Book

Why Read?

Reading has always been an essential part of school, work, and life in general. Children are encouraged to read aloud or silently to help in linguistic development. Over time, this constant exposure to books allows them to recognize proper grammar and advanced vocabulary. The importance of reading, however, extends beyond school - it also helps with social awareness. Stories bring different characters to life and show how they think and act. From an early age, children will learn to respect all people and opinions.

What We Do

The book club takes place every week after choir practice. Students choose from a list of books that differs by grade level, and volunteers help them read it. If they finish within that hour, the students are encouraged to take a short quiz to measure their understanding. Longer books can be taken home and read throughout the week. Based on their quiz scores, students may or may not receive points for a prize later!
